Exploring The Alps – The Project

Info: The North Face Journal brings to you another mind blowing project of one of The North Face® Athletes Hervé Bermasse

The Project:
Three new routes, up three of the highest mountains in the Alps, in three different ascent styles, with the aim to push the limits of mountaineering in the Alps where alpinism was born.

We will follow Hervé during the season before, during and after his performances, but also in between the routes we want to discover the passion for alpinism and the reason that are leading the man to take this challenge.

La Grave: A Skier's Journey Ep2

Info: The second in a series of 3 ski-travel episodes (Ep1: Kashmir - A Skier's Journey / Ep3: Freshfield Icefield - A Skier's Journey), skiers Chad Sayers and Tobin Seagel continue their worldly winter journey arriving in La Grave, France - home to the Téléphérique La Grave-La Meije, a quirky yet stalwart cable car that transports skiers to 3200m, high in the Southern French Alps.

Here, the terrain is wild, unmarked, and unpatrolled - a stripped down, raw version of big mountain skiing. With 2km of vertical drop, a simple ski run journeys through a labyrinth of glaciers, couloirs, and forest glades. Local freerider Bruno Florit, and UIAGM mountain guide Joe Vallone share how unique and special La Grave is, but also reveal the respect a skier must have for the mountain when in search of such deep rewards.

Arnaud Petit: Sport Is Now Trad

Info: This video of Arnaud Petit making the first traditional ascent (FTA?) of The black bean, 8b, in the Biographie sector at Céüse, France. It's also the perfect illustration to why it's so much more difficult to climb 8b trad compared to 8b sport, especially so when there are only 9 possible spots for gear in 65 meters, and most of them are dubious.

To call this a traditional ascent is perhaps wrong, as there is nothing traditional about placing cams and nuts in limestone rock...
